The first Wednesday in every month was a Perfectly Awful Day (pierwsza środa każdego miesiąca była Absolutnie Okropnym Dniem) - a day to be awaited with dread (dniem, na który się czekało ze strachem), endured with courage (przeżywało się z odwagą) and forgotten with haste (i pośpiesznie się zapominało; to forget). Every floor must be spotless (każda podłoga powinna była być nienagannie czysta: "bez plam"; spot - plama; spotless - nieskazitelny, nienagannie czysty), every chair dustless (każde krzesło pozbawione kurzu; dust - kurz; dustless - pozbawiony kurzu), and every bed without a wrinkle (i każde łóżko bez żadnych fałdów; wrinkle - zmarszczka; fałd). Ninety-seven squirming little orphans (dziewięćdziesiąt siedem wiercących się małych sierotek; to squirm - skręcać się; wiercić się, zwijać się) must be scrubbed (powinny były być wyszorowane; to scrub - czyścić, szurać, myć /szczeg. szczotką z mydłem/) and combed (i uczesane) and buttoned into freshly starched ginghams (i ubrane: "zapięte na wszystkie guziki" w świeżo wykrochmaloną / odzież/ z kraciastej bawełny; gingham - bawełniana materia z malowanej przędzy /zwykl. pasiasta lub kraciasta/); and all ninety-seven reminded of their manners (i wszystkim dziewięćdziesięciu siedmiu /trzeba było/ przypomnieć o dobrych manierach; to remind - przypominać, przypomnieć; manner - maniera, metoda, sposób; manners - sposób zachowania, dobre maniery), and told to say, 'Yes, sir,' 'No, sir,' whenever a Trustee spoke (i powiedzieć, żeby mówiły "Tak, panie" i "Nie, panie" za każdym razem, kiedy będzie mówił jeden z kuratorów).

Every floor must be spotless, every chair dustless, and every bed without a wrinkle. Ninety-seven squirming little orphans must be scrubbed and combed and buttoned into freshly starched ginghams; and all ninety-seven reminded of their manners, and told to say, 'Yes, sir,' 'No, sir,' whenever a Trustee spoke.

It was a distressing time (to był męczący czas; to distress - sprawiać ból, męczyć, trwożyć); and poor Jerusha Abbott, being the oldest orphan (i biedna Jerusza Abbott, która była jedną z najstarszych sierot /w sierocińcu/; old - stary), had to bear the brunt of it (zmuszona była znosić cały główny ciężar /tego czasu/ = brać na siebie odpowiedzialność; to bear - znosić; cierpieć, wytrzymać; brunt - siła uderzenia; główny ciężar, kryzys). Jerusha escaped from the pantry (Jerusza uciekła ze spiżarni) where she had been making sandwiches for the asylum's guests (gdzie robiła kanapki dla gości sierocińca), and turned upstairs to accomplish her regular work (i poszła na górę, żeby skończyć swoją normalną pracę; to turn - skręcać; kierować się; regular - prawidłowy, miarowy; zwykły, zwyczajowy).

It was a distressing time; and poor Jerusha Abbott, being the oldest orphan, had to bear the brunt of it. But this particular first Wednesday, like its predecessors, finally dragged itself to a close. Jerusha escaped from the pantry where she had been making sandwiches for the asylum's guests, and turned upstairs to accomplish her regular work.

Her special care was room F (jej szczególną troską był pokój "F"), where eleven little tots, from four to seven (w którym jedenaścioro maluchów, od czterech do siedmiu lat; tot - maluch), occupied eleven little cots set in a row (zajmowało jednaście małych /dziecinnych/ łóżeczek ustawionych w rzędzie). Jerusha assembled her charges (Jerusza zebrała /wokół siebie/ swoich podopiecznych; charge - ciężar; osoba znajdująca się pod opieką, wychowanek), straightened their rumpled frocks (rozprostowała ich zmięte sukienki), wiped their noses (wytarła ich noski), and started them in an orderly and willing line towards the dining-room (i wysłała ich zorganizowanym i posłusznym szeregiem do jadalni; willing - gotowy, chętny /do zrobienia czegoś/; line - linia; szereg, rząd) to engage themselves for a blessed half hour (żeby zająć ich na błogie pół godziny; to engage - zatrudnić; zajmować się) with bread and milk and prune pudding (chlebem, mlekiem i budyniem z suszonych śliwek).

Jerusha assembled her charges, straightened their rumpled frocks, wiped their noses, and started them in an orderly and willing line towards the dining-room to engage themselves for a blessed half hour with bread and milk and prune pudding.

Then she dropped down on the window seat (potem ona upadła na krzesło obok okna; to drop - kapać; opuszczać się, padać) and leaned throbbing temples against the cool glass (i oparła się pulsującymi skoroniami o chłodną szybę; to lean - schylać się; oprzeć się). She had been on her feet since five that morning (była na nogach od piątej rano), doing everybody's bidding (wykonując rozkazy wszystkich; bidding - propozycja ceny /na aukcji/; rozkaz, nakaz), scolded and hurried by a nervous matron (besztana i poganiana przez nerwową dyrektorkę; matron - zamężna kobieta; kierowiczka gospodarstwa, dyrektorka /szkoły/ itp.).

Then she dropped down on the window seat and leaned throbbing temples against the cool glass. She had been on her feet since five that morning, doing everybody's bidding, scolded and hurried by a nervous matron.

Mrs. Lippett, behind the scenes (pani Lippett w życiu codziennym: "za kulisami"), did not always maintain that calm and pompous dignity (nie zawsze zachowywała taką spokojną i pompatyczną godność; dignity - godność; powaga) with which she faced an audience of Trustees and lady visitors (z którą witała publiczność: "stawała na przeciw publiczności" Kuratorów i odwiedzających dam; visitor - odwiedzający, gość; inspektor; audytor). Jerusha gazed out across a broad stretch of frozen lawn (Jerusza wpatrywała się na zewnątrz w szeroki pas zamarzniętego trawnika; to gaze - bacznie patrzeć, gapić się; across - przez, po tamtej stronie; stretch - wyciągnięcie; przestrzeń, odcinek), beyond the tall iron paling that marked the confines of the asylum (poprzez wysoki żelazny płot, który wyznaczał granicę sierocińca; beyond - poza /granicą/), down undulating ridges sprinkled with country estates (przez faliste grzbiety, usypane wiejskimi domami; to sprinkle - pryskać, kropić; posypać), to the spires of the village rising from the midst of bare trees (przez wiejskie iglice, które górowały wśród gołych drzew).

Mrs. Lippett, behind the scenes, did not always maintain that calm and pompous dignity with which she faced an audience of Trustees and lady visitors. Jerusha gazed out across a broad stretch of frozen lawn, beyond the tall iron paling that marked the confines of the asylum, down undulating ridges sprinkled with country estates, to the spires of the village rising from the midst of bare trees.

The day was ended (dzień się skończył) - quite successfully, so far as she knew (z powodzeniem, jak jej było wiadomo). The Trustees and the visiting committee had made their rounds (kuratorzy i komisja inspekcyjna zrobili obchód; round - koło; runda; kolejka), and read their reports (przeczytali raporty), and drunk their tea (napili się herbaty), and now were hurrying home to their own cheerful firesides (а teraz śpieszyli się do domu, do swoich /własnych/ wesołych ognisk domowych), to forget their bothersome little charges for another month (żeby zapomnieć o swoich dokuczliwych małych wychowankach na cały miesiąc; little - mały, nieduży; nieistotny, nieważny). Jerusha leaned forward watching with curiosity (Jerusza przechyliła się do przodu, obserwując z zaciekawieniem) - and a touch of wistfulness (i z pewną zadumą; touch - dotyk; odrobina, domieszka) - the stream of carriages and automobiles that rolled out of the asylum gates (strumień karet i samochodów, które wyjeżdżały poza bramy sierocińca; stream - rzeczka, strumyk; szereg, przepływ).

The day was ended - quite successfully, so far as she knew. The Trustees and the visiting committee had made their rounds, and read their reports, and drunk their tea, and now were hurrying home to their own cheerful firesides, to forget their bothersome little charges for another month. Jerusha leaned forward watching with curiosity - and a touch of wistfulness - the stream of carriages and automobiles that rolled out of the asylum gates.

In imagination she followed first one equipage (w swojej wyobraźni podążała najpierw za jednym powozem), then another (potem za drugim), to the big houses dotted along the hillside (do dużych domów, które były rozrzucone na wzgórzu; to dot - stawiać kropki; siać, pocętkować). She pictured herself in a fur coat (odmalowywała sobie siebie w futrzanym płaszczu; to picture - przedstawiać na obrazie, rysować; wyobrażać sobie; fur - futro) and a velvet hat trimmed with feathers (i w aksamitnym kapeluszu ozdobionym piórami; to trim - doprowadzać do porządku; ozdabiać, wykańczać) leaning back in the seat (/ jak/ opiera się o siedzisko) and nonchalantly murmuring "Home" to the driver (i niedbale /nonszalancko/ mówi do kierowcy: "Do domu"). But on the door-sill of her home the picture grew blurred (ale obok progu jej domu obrazek stawał się rozmyty; blurred - ubrudzony; niejasny, rozmyty).

Jerusha had an imagination (Jerusza miała wyobraźnię) - an imagination, Mrs. Lippett told her (taką wyobraźnię, jak mówiła jej pani Lippett), that would get her into trouble if she didn't take care (z powodu której wpakuje się w kłopoty, jeśli nie będzie uważać; trouble - niepokój, trwoga; nieprzyjemność, kłopot) - but keen as it was (ale nawet gdyby była bujna = żywa), it could not carry her beyond the front porch of the houses she would enter (to nie potrafiłaby przenieść jej przez próg tych domów, do których jej się chciało wejść; porch - przedsionek, ganek).
